Case Study 01 — Crown & Stem
Challenge
A client brought in a 1970s dress watch passed down from a relative. The crown had been pulled hard at some point and the stem had fractured inside the tube. The crown could be rotated but nothing engaged.
Approach
The broken stem section was removed from the tube without disturbing the movement. A replacement stem was sourced to specification and fitted with a period-appropriate crown. The tube threads were checked and found intact.
Outcome
Watch collected in five working days. Winding and time-setting fully functional. Service record includes stem specification and source notes. Client described the result as "better than I expected it could be."
Case Study 02 — Case Polishing
Challenge
A daily-wear diver had accumulated several years of scratches across the brushed case body and polished bezel. The owner wanted it improved but was concerned that the bezel insert markings might be affected and that the brushed texture would be removed.
Approach
The bezel insert was masked before any finishing work. The case body brushed surfaces were worked with the existing grain direction. The polished case flanks and crown were addressed separately. The bezel insert was inspected and found undamaged at every stage.
Outcome
Completed in six days. Surface scratches largely reduced; existing brushed texture preserved. Bezel insert fully intact. The service record includes zone mapping notes and materials used, which the owner said he'd been wanting from a polishing job for years.
Case Study 03 — Water-Resistance Testing
Challenge
A client brought in a sports watch rated to 200m before a diving holiday. During dry pressure testing, the watch failed to hold pressure. This is not uncommon in watches that haven't been serviced in several years — gaskets deteriorate regardless of use.
Approach
The technician identified the crown gasket as the primary leak point via isolated testing. All three gaskets (crown, caseback, crystal) were replaced as a set. Re-testing confirmed the watch held pressure at the manufacturer's specified rating.
Outcome
Watch completed the following working day. Written test certificate issued with before and after pressure readings. The client noted that the previous service centre had simply told him the watch was "fine" without testing. He said having the numbers in writing was what he needed.
